Kawadoko(川床): The kawadoko, a type of deck built over the Kifunegawa river in Kyoto, is a symbol of summer. The river is the headstream of the Kamogawa river that flows through the city. Diners on the kawadoko can savor the taste of various freshwater fish, including ayu (sweetfish), amago (salmon) and carp while listening to the babbling of the stream. The tradition was reputedly started by court nobles and merchants in bygone years. The concept of kawadoko dining is seen as part of the long-cherished wisdom of Kyoto people, who like to spend the hot summer elegantly.
